International audience; The 3D chain (acquisition-processing-compression) is , most of the time , sequenced into several steps. Such approaches result into an one-dense acquisition of 3D points. In large scope of applications , the first processing step consists in simplifying the data. In this paper , we propose a coarse to fine acquisition system which permits to obtain simplified data directly from the acquisition. By calculating some complementary information from 2D images , such as 3D normals , multiple homogeneous regions will be segmented and affected to a given primitive class. Abstract Objective: To assess whether the values of different measurements taken on three-dimensional (3D) reconstructions from cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) are comparable with those taken on two-dimensional (2D) images from conventional lateral cephalometric radiographs (LCRs) and to examine if there are differences between the different types of CBCT software when taking those measurements. A Review of Recent Advances in Ear Recognition

Ear recognition has become a rapidly growing research area in recent years. This paper gives an up-to-date review of research works in ear recognition based on 3D data and 2D ear images. For ear recognition in 3D, recent works on 3D feature extraction and model matching are presented and discussed. For 3D ear recognition based on 2D images, 3D ear model reconstruction is mainly discussed. For ear recognition in 2D, main research works on ear detection, ear feature extraction and classification are presented and discussed. Some possible future research interests are proposed in the end.

Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the theoretical principles of 3D microscopy with the widespread realizations of 3D microscopy.Based on the paraxial diffraction equations, it has been shown that conventional microscopes, when dealing with 3D fluorescent samples, provide sets of 2D images. These images of the different transverse sections of the 3D object contain, in addition to the sharp image of the in focus section, the blurred images of the rest of the specimen. The paraxial formalism has been generalized in a very simple way to a non-paraxial context, showing that the equations that govern non-paraxial imaging are similar to those that govern paraxial imaging.
